The beauty of going green: clean packaging for clean beauty

Eco-friendly beauty is no longer associated with handmade products found in neighbourhood health food stores.

Major brands are jumping on the “clean beauty” bandwagon by cutting down on the amount of ingredients they use and ensuring those ingredients are non-toxic, sustainably sourced and cruelty-free.

Solid beauty products, which include shampoos, conditioners, deodorants, perfume and cleansers among others, are gaining in popularity thanks to their environmental credentials as well as their long shelf life and portability.

Solid products tend to be more eco-friendly than their liquid equivalents as they eliminate the need for non-recyclable plastic containers.

Here are some of the packaging options for waterless products:

  • Glass pots: glass is an easily-recycled traditional packaging material that can also be repurposed for other uses, such as storage. However, its weight and breakability means it is most suited to smaller products, such as balms.
  • Metal tins: metal is also reusable and recyclable, lighter than glass, and has the advantage of protecting contents from light.
  • Silicone containers: silicone is lightweight, portable and easy to clean, making it ideal for reuse and travel.
  • Paperboard: paper makes great primary or secondary packaging for solid beauty products. It’s recyclable, lightweight and versatile and can be easily customised to fit brand identity. Metallized paper, which is coated with a microscopically-thin layer of aluminium, offers a high-and premium look that is just as recyclable as less eco-friendly counterparts containing films or plastics.
